Quit Being a Bridge
I'm so excited to be back!! Welcome to the relaunch of Becoming Amanda Podcast!
How many times have you given of all your resources to someone and walk away feeling drained? Bridges are meant for ease of accessibility and often times people use others as bridges whether it's to avoid an inconvenience to themselves, therapy that they need or just to make themselves more comfortable. In today's episode, we will cover how to STOP being the bridge for everyone else and start staying no to things that don't make you FEEL good.
Journal Prompt: Exploring Your Role as a Bridge
Reflect on the recent instances where you've found yourself in the role of a 'bridge' for someone. These can be moments when you've connected people, smoothed over conflicts, or provided support or resources to facilitate others' goals or needs. Consider the following questions as you journal:
-
Describe the Situation: What was the situation in which you acted as a bridge? Who was involved, and what did you do?
-
Identify Your Motivations: What motivated you to take on this role? Were you seeking approval, trying to avoid conflict, feeling responsible for others' happiness, or something else?
-
Assess the Impact on You: How did acting as a bridge in this situation affect you physically, emotionally, and mentally? Did it align with your values and needs, or did it lead to neglect of your well-being?
-
Consider the Recurrence: Is this a recurring role you find yourself in with specific people or in general? Why do you think that is?
-
Evaluate the Outcomes: What were the outcomes of you being a bridge? Consider both the positive impacts and the negative consequences, if any.
-
Reflect on Alternatives: Looking back, were there alternative ways to handle the situation that might not have required you to be a bridge? What might have happened if you stepped back?
-
Envision Boundaries: Imagine setting boundaries that prevent you from overextending yourself as a bridge. What do these boundaries look like, and how can you communicate them effectively?
-
Personal Growth: What have you learned about yourself through these reflections? How can this understanding inform your future interactions and decisions?
